What are flower remedies?
Flower remedies, also called flower essences, are a rapidly growing segment of the natural health movement and are a type of natural healing therapy. Originally developed for humans, in pets they treat conditions such as anxiety and fear issues, misbehavior and other destructive behaviors. Unlike some therapies, they aren’t used to cure physical illness directly, but instead focus on helping to heal negative emotions.
Science has shown us how an animal’s mental and emotional state can trigger the release of hormones and neurotransmitters that affect the body's ability to heal.
Flower remedies offer a safe, natural means to transform negative states of mind into positive ones, bringing about an emotional re-balancing allowing courage to emerge and peace to be restored. When a flower remedy is given to a pet for fear, courage begins to develop. The courage is a result of fear lessening and feelings of calm increasing; this, in turn, generates even more courage.
Flower essences are a safe, gentle alternative to mood altering synthetic drugs such as Prozac. Flower remedies are not drugs, and not chemical in nature, they are pure and non-toxic. There have been no known cases where flower remedies have proven less than one hundred percent safe.
They are extremely easy to use, and if the wrong ones are chosen by mistake they simply do not act. It is impossible to cause problems by giving the wrong remedy, or by giving too high a dose. These claims have been systematically tested and verified over a period of almost 100 years.
Flower remedies were discovered in the early 20th century by Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician and homeopath who recognized the profound effect the mind has on healing. He believed that negative emotional states suppress the body's natural healing and that this emotional imbalance was actually the primary cause of physical disease. He reasoned that when these emotional problems were treated the physical symptoms would go away.
4 Paws Pure has studied Bach® Flower essences and worked with holistic experts to develop custom remedies to help address the following common pet issues.
Choosing a Special Remedy.
These special remedy combinations were developed specifically by 4 Paws Pure, in conjunction with holistic veterinarians to treat conditions specific to animals. Each remedy contains specific flower essences whose unique characteristics function to stabilize different emotional states related to the specific condition each remedy is named after.
Administering Flower Remedies.
Flower remedies may be given singly or in combination without side effects. The easiest way to administer a flower essence is by dropping several drops in the pet’s water or food dish. They can also be applied topically; anywhere it can be applied directly to skin.
The usual dose for most long-standing or chronic problems is 2 - 4 drops 4 times a day for 4 weeks. For acute emergencies or sudden shocks, you can dose with 2 - 4 drops every 15 minutes until the condition stabilizes, then repeat as necessary. It is the frequency of doses rather than the amount of the dose that is important.
Any flower remedy can bring an immediate, dramatic change in acute cases, however this reaction is not always typical. The most typical pattern is to address gradual effects over a period of time. Flower essences are not a cure-all, rather, they stimulate transformation in subtle ways and are most effective when used as part of a holistic program of health maintenance and improvement.
Although helpful as an adjunct treatment, the special remedies are not intended to be a replacement for veterinary care. Changes in a pet's health should always be discussed with your veterinarian.
